Is it important to take care of your leather?

It is very important to take care of all your leather products. By its nature, leather should be well-cared for and maintained. Taking great care and pride in your leathers will ensure its deterioration is slowed down, providing longevity that will last generations, just like our tools.

What is Badalassi Carlo leather?

Badalassi Carlo is the name of the tannery that create this type of leather and is based in Tuscany, Italy.

Our factory in a neighbouring city Varese, orders hides from Badalassi Carlo and produces our vegetable tanned leather sheaths up to our design and specifications.

What is vegetable-tanned leather?

Vegetable-tanned leather is made using a very unique process that uses the power of natural tannins. These are found in organic materials to add a unique look and feel to the animal hide. Hides are soaked in a vat containing tannin that contains organic natural materials. This soaking process dehydrates the leather, which contributes to the texture and its softness, making it lovely to touch.

How do you clean your leather sheaths?

We have tried and tested the best way to care for our sheaths right at home in our London studio, below are the steps to ensuring it will be well-maintained.

  1. Make sure to brush away any dirt or dust using a soft natural bristle brush
  2. Where possible, spot clean your leather with a lint free cloth and minimal water
  3. Once complete, use a leather conditioner or leather cream (we love the Mulberry Leather Cream for our sheaths!) and apply an even layer across your sheath, ensuring it doesn’t touch the suede inside lining. We highly recommend spot testing a small section with any conditioner you use to ensure it does not mar the leather.
  4. Allow this to dry, this can take up to two or three hours. Once this has dried, you’ll notice the leather has darkened to a more rich tan hue.
  5.  Once dried, you can feel the difference straight away with the texture of the leather being much smoother and hydrated.

Occasionally, we recommend using a beeswax as part of the final step to safeguard your sheaths from knocks and scratches. Apply a tiny amount of beeswax on a lint-free cloth and evenly spread it across your sheath, and remove any excess. Leave to dry safely for around 30 minutes.

For any deep scratches we recommend taking them to your local leather repair shop to see if they can fill in the gaps.

We hope you love the outcome of your conditioned and protected leathers, and will be able to use them for years to come as they intended.
